South Africa has shed the label of ‘chokers’ by winning the World Test Championship, says captain
The Proteas, led by South African captain Timba Bawuma, shed the label of ‘chokers’ by winning the World Test Championship.
Yesterday, South Africa defeated Australia by 5 wickets at the historic Lord’s Cricket Ground to win its first ICC title.
After the historic victory, South African captain Timba Bawuma, while speaking at the presentation, said that they tried to put us under mental pressure, the stigma of “chokers” (a team that loses under pressure) was repeated on us that day.
He said that playing against Australia has changed a lot in the last few years, now the Kangaroos adopt an aggressive approach with body language and skill, earlier they did it with their tongue.
Timba Bawuma said that the taunt of chokers was heard again this morning, one of their players said that we could lose our remaining 8 wickets before 60 runs.
When Markram and I were at the crease, our focus was on winning, so there was not much talk, Australia tried their best to drag out the match.
On this occasion, Pat Cummins said that they accept defeat and the South African team has played its best game and deserved to be the champion.
It should be noted that when play began on the fourth day of the Test match, South Africa needed 69 more runs to win, the pressure on Bavuma and Aiden Markram was very high and the Australian players tried their best to put the Proteas under pressure and take wickets and change the course of the match.
Pat Cummins got Temba Bavuma caught behind the wicket, then South Africa still needed 65 runs to win. After that, Mitchell Starc took the wicket of Tristan Stubbs with a wonderful ball, and the target was further reduced to only 41.
But Aiden Markram played a brilliant innings and was dismissed for 136 runs, leaving South Africa just 10 runs away from victory.
