Winds gusting to 220 km/h uprooted more than 700 trees and road signs.
Southern Taiwan has been wreaking havoc as Typhoon Danas battered the island. Strong winds and rain have killed two people and injured more than 330, while power has been cut off to 500,000 homes.
Typhoons in Taiwan often hit the eastern mountainous regions, but Typhoon Danas unusually hit the western coast, which is a densely populated area.
According to authorities, winds gusting up to 220 kilometers per hour uprooted more than 700 trees and road signs. The strongest winds were recorded in Yunlin County.
In a message on Facebook, Taiwan President Lai Cheng-te urged the public to exercise extreme caution, as the storm could affect all parts of the country.
Officials said one person died after a tree fell and another died after a ventilator failed.
No major damage has been reported in the Taiwan Science Park, home to global technology giant TSMC.
Meanwhile, a warning has also been issued for China’s eastern province of Zhejiang. The storm is expected to make landfall between Fujian and Taizhou by Tuesday night, according to the China Meteorological Administration. As a precaution, 121 passenger ships, 64 ferry services, and 181 construction projects have been suspended.
