Decision to install early warning system in Swat River

Commissioner Malakand presented a detailed report on the Swat incident to the committee.

Peshawar: After the death of 12 people in the Swat River, it has been decided to install early warning systems at different places in the river.

A detailed report on the Swat incident was submitted to the committee by the Commissioner Malakand.

According to official sources, Commissioner Malakand Division Abid Wazir appeared before the inquiry committee established regarding the Swat tragedy. The Commissioner Malakand Division submitted a written report to the inquiry committee.

The committee asked the commissioner what should be done in the future to avoid such incidents and promote tourism?

Commissioner Malakand Abid Wazir replied that tourism is a separate sector, it is not the work of the Tehsil Municipal Administration, tourism in Swat should be looked after by the Upper Swat Development Authority, the Swat Development Authority can take better care of tourist places and tourists.

The committee asked what steps were taken to check the flooding in rivers and streams in advance?

He replied that they are working on an early warning system, have contacted the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute and the World Wildlife Fund, GI is developing a modern early warning system which will be installed on rivers and streams.

The inquiry committee asked the Commissioner Malakand Division what happened on June 27?

The Commissioner replied that due to heavy rain, the water level in the Swat River at Khwaza Khela reached 77,782 cusecs, the hotel guard stopped the tourists from entering the river but they went from the back of the hotel, after the tourists entered the river and the water level increased, rescue was called at 9:45 am.

He further replied that the concerned authorities reached the scene of the incident 20 minutes later at 10:05 am, out of the 17 stranded tourists, 4 were rescued at that time. Several alerts regarding bad weather were received from relevant agencies. All relevant agencies were alerted in view of the flood risks.
