Karachi: A five-storey building collapsed in Shehr-e-Quaid, trapping several people under the rubble, while adjacent buildings are also likely to be affected.
A five-storey residential building near Al-Naveed Hotel in Baghdadi area of Lyari suddenly collapsed, causing panic in the area.
According to rescue officials, the building completely collapsed, and rescue operations were immediately launched as soon as the information was received. So far, 6 people have been pulled out of the rubble in an injured condition, of which 2 are said to be in critical condition.
Six families were living in the collapsed building, while more people are feared to be trapped under the rubble. Due to the closure of narrow streets and roads, there are severe difficulties in transporting heavy machinery to the scene. Local people are also participating in the rescue operations with their own help to pull out the people trapped in the rubble.
The two-storey building adjacent to the collapsed building has also been evacuated, while other adjacent buildings are also considered at risk due to possible damage.
Meanwhile, a 40-year-old seriously injured woman brought to the trauma center of Civil Hospital Karachi has been found with multiple fractures and bruises on her body.
Police, Rangers and rescue teams have reached the spot, while Deputy Commissioner South Javed Nabi Khoso is also present at the scene of the accident. According to the Civil Hospital administration, a total of 6 injured have been shifted to the hospital.
Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tesori, expressing deep sorrow and concern over the incident, has directed the rescue agencies to carry out immediate, coordinated and effective relief operations.
He said that all available resources should be used to safely extract the people buried under the rubble and provide immediate medical assistance to the injured. The Governor warned that any kind of negligence or carelessness would be intolerable.
On the other hand, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah also took immediate notice of the incident and termed it extremely unfortunate. He directed the concerned authorities to submit an immediate report and rescue teams to take all possible steps to pull out the victims from the debris. The Chief Minister also directed to provide immediate medical assistance to the injured.
