The family was formally summoned by calling the local collector’s office, reveals Sofia’s sister
In another controversial move, the Modi government has forced the family of Indian Army’s Muslim female officer, Colonel Sofia Qureshi, to attend Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s roadshow.
According to reports, Colonel Sofia’s sister has revealed that “the family was formally summoned by calling the local collector’s office and forced to shower flowers on her.”
This incident has come to light at a time when the Modi government is already under criticism for making allegations based on religious bias against Colonel Sofia Qureshi.
It may be recalled that the BJP had earlier targeted Colonel Sofia on the basis of her religious identity and made baseless allegations of her association with anti-national elements, even though she is an experienced and respected military officer whose professional services are well-known.
Political observers say that presenting Colonel Sofia’s family as a “showpiece” in a political show is not only insensitive but also highlights the BJP’s Hindutva ideology and anti-minority policies.
Human rights activists and opposition leaders have strongly condemned the act, calling it the “height of moral degradation”, and have demanded that the government stop using the families of military personnel for political purposes.
The matter has also sparked a strong reaction on social media, where users are calling the treatment of Colonel Sofia evidence of the BJP’s double standards.
