Brain-eating amoeba

The mortality rate for this disease is 97 percent.

A microscopic creature that is made up of a single cell is found in almost every region of the world, but it is so dangerous that it eats away at the human brain. Its scientific name is Naegleria fowleri.

It is a microscopic, free-living amoeba that is found in warm water and almost always causes a fatal infection by invading the brain.

This amoeba enters the human body through the nose, especially when swimming or bathing in a river, and from there reaches the brain. It begins to eat away at the brain tissue and causes a disease called primary amebic meningoencephalitis:

The initial symptoms, which appear in 1 to 9 days, are as follows:

Headache
Fever
Nausea, vomiting
Stuck or runny nose
Stiff neck
Confusion
Seizures
Unconsciousness
Death (usually within 5 to 7 days)

The mortality rate for this disease is 97 percent. Only a few people have survived out of hundreds of cases worldwide.

This amoeba is commonly found in lakes, ponds, rivers, hot springs. It is also found in poorly cleaned taps or water tanks.
