Federal Board of Revenue is the backbone of Pakistan’s financial system, says Muhammad Aurangzeb
ISLAMABAD: Federal Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb has stressed on introducing a system of government based on performance and accountability during the cabinet committee meeting.
While chairing the cabinet committee meeting on restructuring the federal government structure in the Ministry of Finance, Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb said that the Federal Board of Revenue is the backbone of Pakistan’s financial system.
He said that the government is implementing the FBR reform plan under the supervision of the Prime Minister with full commitment to achieve fiscal self-sufficiency by increasing tax collection and making the FBR a modern, efficient and accountable institution.
According to the Ministry of Finance, the meeting was attended by Federal Minister for Energy Sardar Owais Ahmed Khan Leghari and senior officials of the concerned ministries and divisions. In the meeting, the Power Division gave a detailed briefing on the Power Planning and Monitoring Company, in which the structure of the institution, major responsibilities, notable achievements and future plans were presented.
The presentation on the occasion emphasized the need to strengthen the power sector as a strong technical institution for planning and performance monitoring, with a particular focus on scientific forecasting, system improvement and inter-departmental coordination.
The Cabinet Committee was also briefed by the Law Division on its responsibilities, performance standards, ongoing restructuring activities and their impact on public policy and service delivery, which included a review of subordinate agencies and suggestions for improving institutional capacity, eliminating duplication of authority and creating a simple and effective administrative structure for better results.
The Committee also discussed the recommendations of the Sub-Committee headed by Salman Ahmed, Ambassador at Large, on institutional reforms related to the Revenue Division. The recommendations emphasized making the administrative structure more efficient, better utilization of human resources and strengthening alignment with national priorities.
The meeting also emphasized paving the way for improving public services through a performance-based system of governance and an effective accountability system. The Finance Minister also emphasized that performance-based human resource policies should be adopted in the FBR system so that every rupee of government expenditure leads to tangible improvements in the form of tax collection, law enforcement, and public convenience.
