Under the Railways Act 1890, it is the responsibility of provincial governments to make level crossings safe.
Lahore: More than half of the railway level crossings across the country are devoid of gates and gatekeepers, which has increased the risk of train accidents.
According to the details released by the Railways Minister, there are a total of 2,777 railway level crossings across Pakistan, out of which 1,416 crossings have neither gates installed nor gatekeepers deployed.
According to the documents, only 1,361 level crossings have gates and staff. According to the documents, it is the responsibility of the provincial governments to make level crossings safe under the Railways Act 1890.
The document states that 550 such level crossings have been declared “extremely dangerous”, which not only do not have gates but also their location is sensitive in terms of accidents.
Of these, only 175 crossings have been upgraded and made safe so far. According to railway officials, they are in constant contact with provincial governments to make the remaining dangerous crossings safe.
