ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Thursday issued a hydrological alert for July 13–17, warning of moderate to heavy rainfall across several parts of the country and the risk of flooding in major rivers and low-lying areas.
According to the NDMA’s Monsoon System Alert, rainfall intensity may increase due to moisture from the Arabian Sea, potentially affecting Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, and Sindh.
Major Rivers May Overflow
The NDMA warned that a westerly weather system will increase the flow of major rivers, including the Indus, Kabul, Jhelum (upper Mangla), and Chenab.
As of now:
- Tarbela, Taunsa, and Guddu are at low flood level
- Kalabagh and Chashma are at medium flood level
- Water levels at Taunsa are forecast to rise to medium levels in the coming days
Authorities expect low to medium flood levels in the Indus River system. They warn that the Chenab River may flood at Marala and Khanki, while the Kabul River is likely to rise at Nowshera. Local rainfall may also trigger flooding in the Swat and Panjkora rivers.
Northeast and Southern Balochistan at Risk
Authorities expect high water flow in rivers and canals across northeastern Balochistan, including Jhal Magsi, Kachhi, Sibi, Qila Saifullah, Zhob, and Musakhel. Localized flooding may occur in Khuzdar, Awaran, Lasbela, and Kalat.
The NDMA said the flood risk in these districts has increased due to expected persistent rainfall.
Dam Storage and Preparedness
According to current data, Tarbela Dam is at 74% capacity, while Mangla Dam is at 44%. Authorities are monitoring both reservoirs closely in anticipation of further rainfall.
NDMA has directed district administrations, especially in Central and Northeast Punjab, to prepare dewatering equipment to manage expected urban flooding from heavy rainfall.
Public Advisory Issued
The NDMA has advised residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and take preventive measures, including:
- Avoiding low bridges and flooded roads
- Relocating livestock and vehicles to higher ground
- Keeping emergency supplies for 3–5 days
- Identifying evacuation routes before nightfall
Communities are urged to stay informed. Follow official alerts on television, radio, and mobile notifications. Use the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert App for real-time updates.
National Coordination Underway
NDMA officials confirmed ongoing coordination with relevant departments to ensure timely dissemination of flood warnings and emergency protocols. The authority also called on citizens to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rains and to report emergencies immediately to local disaster response teams.
Stay Prepared, Stay Safe
The NDMA continues to monitor the evolving weather conditions and has assured full coordination with provincial and local authorities. Citizens are strongly advised to remain alert, avoid flood-prone areas, and follow all official advisories.
In case of emergency, contact local authorities immediately. Preparedness and caution can save lives.
