Heavy rains forecast in Pakhtunkhwa, fear of flooding in streams and rivers

Heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds are likely to occur in various districts in the coming days, the Meteorological Department has said.

Heavy rains have been forecast in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, resulting in flooding in streams and rivers.

The Meteorological Department has issued a forecast of thunderstorms, strong winds and heavy rains in various districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the coming days, due to which there is a risk of flooding in rivers, flooding in streams and landslides in mountainous areas.

Rain along with wind and thunderstorms are likely in the areas of Chitral, Upper Dir, Lower Dir, Swat, Buner, Malakand, Bajaur, Battagram and Shangla. Similarly, heavy rains are also expected in Kohistan, Torghar, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Kurram and Mohmand.

Meanwhile, Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi, Nowshera, Charsadda, Kohat, Hangu, Khyber Orakzai, Bannu, Karak, Lakki Marwat, Dera Ismail Khan, Tank and North and South Waziristan districts may also be affected by rains. Heavy rains with thunder and strong winds are expected in these areas.

The Meteorological Department has warned that the rivers of Swat, Panjkora and Kabul may overflow due to heavy rains, while there is a possibility of flooding in local streams of Swabi, Mardan, Mansehra, Kohistan, Dir, Shangla and Waziristan.

The low-lying areas of Peshawar, Nowshera, Tank and Dera Ismail Khan may also face waterlogging and flooding.

Moreover, there are risks of landslides in the mountainous areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which can cause traffic flow and road closures.

Rain was recorded in several areas including Kalam, Saidu Sharif, Malam Jabba, Balakot, and Peshawar yesterday. According to the Meteorological Department, the temperature in Dera Ismail Khan was 41 degrees Celsius, Bannu and Mirkhani Chitral 40 degrees, while Peshawar, Pattan, Kohat, and Lower Chitral recorded 38 degrees. In addition, the temperature in Kalam was 28 degrees Celsius, Malam Jabba 25 degrees Celsius, Dir 34 degrees Celsius, and Lower Dir 36 degrees Celsius.

The Meteorological Department has directed citizens to exercise caution and the relevant agencies to be ready to deal with emergencies.
