Flooding is expected in various areas of Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Islamabad: Following the unprecedented rise in temperatures in Islamabad, the Meteorological Department has issued a warning of the risk of flooding due to melting glaciers in Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
According to meteorologist Zeenat Yasmin, the risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF) has increased due to further increase in temperatures and weather changes next week, which could lead to flash floods and glacial floods in the affected valleys.
The Meteorological Department said that high temperatures and weather systems are increasing the pressure on glacial lakes, which is likely to cause flooding in various areas of Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
In this regard, the PMD has issued instructions to the relevant agencies to remain alert and take precautionary measures so that advance arrangements can be made to deal with any possible emergency.
The Meteorological Department has directed citizens and tourists to avoid traveling to sensitive and dangerous areas in view of the possible danger and follow the instructions issued by local authorities.
Describing global warming and local temperature increases as dangerous for the region, experts have stressed that urgent measures are needed at the local level to address the impacts of climate change so that human lives and property can be protected.
