Social activist Faizan Hussain has filed a petition in the High Court against the decision to change the number plates. The hearing of the petition will be on July 14.
The petition has taken the position that the Sindh government’s decision to change the number plates is causing difficulties to poor citizens. According to the Sindh government’s notification, the vehicles of citizens who do not install new number plates will be confiscated.
The petition said that the citizens had obtained the old number plates after paying money. The government should provide the new design number plates for free. The old number plates are also issued by the government. There are no grounds for fines and confiscation in the absence of new number plates.
The petition complained that the Motor Vehicle and Traffic Police have started business on the basis of new number plates. Money is being collected for obtaining number plates. Government agencies are making people wait for months for new number plates. The traffic police is unnecessarily harassing citizens.
Order to issue free new number plates to citizens. Fines on citizens and confiscation of vehicles should be stopped. The Secretary Excise and Taxation, Motor Vehicle Registration Wing and DIG Traffic have been made parties in the petition.
