Russia becomes first country to officially recognize Afghanistan’s Taliban government

The Taliban government in Afghanistan was established in August 2021 and President Ashraf Ghani fled the country.

Russia has announced that it has accepted the credentials of the new ambassador to Afghanistan, making Russia the first country to recognize the Taliban government.

According to the Russian news agency RIA Novosti, this announcement was made by Zamir Kabulov, the Russian President’s special representative for Afghanistan.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that we believe that the move to formally recognize the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan will further strengthen constructive bilateral cooperation between the two countries in various fields.

The Russian Foreign Ministry’s statement also expressed its determination to continue cooperation, assistance and support with Afghanistan in security, counter-terrorism and the fight against drugs.

The statement added that there are great opportunities between the two countries, including in the fields of trade and the economy, especially in energy, transport, agriculture and infrastructure.

The Afghan Foreign Ministry also confirmed that Russian Ambassador Dmitry Zhirnov met with Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi and informed him of the decision.

Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi said in a statement that we appreciate this bold move by Russia and God willing, it will become an example for others.

Thus, Russia has become the first country in the world to officially recognize the Taliban government.

So far, no country has officially recognized the Taliban government, however, China, the United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan and Pakistan have appointed their ambassadors in Kabul, but have not yet officially recognized it.

It should be remembered that Afghanistan is currently facing a severe economic crisis, while the United States has frozen Afghan assets worth about $ 7 billion. In such a situation, Russia’s support will be a source of strength for it.
