BCCI likely to issue show cause notice to Test captain
Indian captain Shubman Gill, who performed brilliantly in the Edgbaston Test, could be in big trouble and his mistake could cost the Indian board Rs 250 crore.
Shubman Gill scored a total of 430 runs in both innings of the second Test match, including 269 in the first innings and 161 in the second. India won thanks to his brilliant batting.
However, during India’s second innings, when the team declared its innings at 427/6, Shubman Gill came out of the pavilion wearing Nike tights on the field, which is a violation of the BCCI’s sponsorship agreement.
It should be noted that the current kit sponsor of the BCCI is Adidas and all players are required to use only Adidas clothing or equipment. Gill’s coming out wearing Nike products on the field could affect the Rs 250 crore deal signed with Adidas.
The contract is for 2023 to March 2028 and this action by Gill falls under the category of breach of contract.
Can Adidas cancel the contract?
Legally, Adidas has the right to terminate the contract and seek damages as the terms of the sponsorship have been violated.
However, since BCCI is the richest cricket board in the world, this partnership is also beneficial for Adidas. Therefore, it is likely that Adidas will simply issue a warning to the board and the player and settle the matter.
The BCCI will likely send a notice to Shubman Gill to give him an opportunity to explain himself.
