Capacity 1530 MW, construction underway on Tunnel No. 5, visit with Chairman WAPDA
Islamabad: The fifth expansion project of Tarbela Dam is expected to generate electricity next year, with a total generation capacity of 1,530 megawatts. After completion, the project will provide an average of 1.347 billion units of low-cost hydroelectric power to the national grid every year.
The expansion project is under construction on Tunnel No. 5 of Tarbela Dam. The World Bank is providing $390 million for the construction of the project, while the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank is providing $300 million.
Federal Minister for Water Resources Moin Ahmed Wattoo, along with Chairman WAPDA Naveed Asghar Chaudhry and other officials, also visited the TS-5 project. Speaking to the media on this occasion, Federal Minister Moin Wattoo said that the Tarbela Fifth Expansion Project will be completed by 2026.
Along with cheap electricity, load shedding will also decrease. These projects will also solve the problem of water shortage. On this occasion, Chairman WAPDA Naveed Asghar Chaudhry said that the project will be completed soon and the price per unit may be higher than the first generation due to the fluctuation of international currency.
