USA: Protests intensify in Los Angeles, emergency curfew imposed, hundreds arrested

700 Marines are stationed outside the city and are being trained to deal with protests.

The situation in Los Angeles, California, has become tense after ongoing protests against immigration raids, prompting authorities to impose an emergency curfew in the downtown area from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

According to Mayor Karen Bass, the curfew is likely to continue for the next several days. According to Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell, at least 378 people have been arrested in the past four days, of which about 200 were arrested today alone.

Authorities said that 23 businesses were looted during the protests. In addition to the police, the National Guard and Marines have also been alerted, who are being deployed to protect federal buildings.

On the other hand, a federal judge has rejected a request for an injunction against the deployment of the National Guard and Marines in Los Angeles. The court has scheduled a regular hearing in the case for Thursday.

About 700 Marines are stationed outside the city and are being trained to deal with the protests.

During this situation, California Governor Gavin Newsom’s statement caused a new political uproar. Newsom said that “democracy is under attack,” to which the Trump administration responded sharply. White House spokesmen called Newsom’s statement a political ploy and fired arrows of ridicule on social media.
