Work underway on AI tool to repair accident-prone vehicles

This AI tool will help accurately assess damage and schedule necessary repairs after vehicle accidents.

Scientists are developing an artificial intelligence (AI) tool that will help accurately assess damage after vehicle accidents and arrange necessary repairs.

The University of Portsmouth’s School of Computing Accident Repair Group is working with ABL1 Touch & Innovate UK to create a system that will be made available to the UK’s top insurers and vehicle suppliers.

According to the Association of British Insurers, 2.4 million motorists made claims in 2024, resulting in a huge payout of £11.7 billion. This is a 23% increase on 2023.

Professor Muhammad Badr, from the university’s AI and Data Science Centre, said the system would provide a ‘technical benchmark’ for the industry.

He said that the AI-based systems project, which is being developed to bring practical engineers up to date with modern technology, will share machine learning and computer vision.
