Mining industry in its early stages, essential to contribute to socio-economic development, says Petroleum Secretary
ISLAMABAD: The World Bank has agreed to provide technical assistance in the integrated infrastructure and socio-economic development projects of Reko Diq and other mining sites in Balochistan.
Sources said that in the recent meeting of the Non-Lending Technical Assistance Committee, the World Bank representative agreed to provide technical assistance.
The meeting held at the Ministry of Economic Affairs discussed the proposal of the Petroleum Division to seek technical assistance from the World Bank for the infrastructure and socio-economic development project of Reko Diq and other mining sites in Balochistan.
In the meeting chaired by the Secretary Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Secretary Petroleum Division told the participants that Pakistan’s mining industry is still in its infancy with a few medium-scale projects.
There is a need to make socio-economic and infrastructure development through the community a part of it, which ensures the protection of the environmental aspects of the ongoing mining operations in Balochistan. He said that Pakistan has created a legal and regulatory framework compatible with international standards.
